Crest Animation Studios Ltd has 300 workstations with
rendering data distributed across each of them and the
rendering process is run Manually on each of the workstation
creating a lot of manual intervention and administration
task. Backing up data across all workstation brought
lots of administration overhead.
The need was felt to consolidate this fragmented data
on to a central repository that would provide high-speed
access and continuous availability along with a disaster
tolerance capable solution. The solution concerns were

Crest Animation Studios Ltd has selected IBM’s
FastT600 Turbo Storage Server, 3582 Ultrium Scalable
Tape Library, NAS 300 Gateway, Blade Center with Qlogic
Fabric, Brocade 2109-F32 switch, Tivoli SANergy, Tivoli
Storage Manager and IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager
and software service for the construction of entire
storage system for its Rendering project. IBM successfully
secured the tender with its advanced technology, superior
performance and excellent service guarantee of its second-generation
LTO (Linear-Tape Open) storage.
The IBM Digital Content Creation solution is a comprehensive
suite of IBM workstations, servers, software, storage
and services all designed to support animators, special
effects wizards and digital media producers. It is part
of the IBM Digital Media Factory, a framework of IBM
and Business Partner technologies that employ open systems
and modular components to simplify complex implementations
The IBM TotalStorage NAS 300 Gateway appliance, which
has a specially designed Windows as an operating system,
is clustered to match the need for continuous availability.
The IBM NAS appliance connects to the central data repository
on the SAN converging both the unique architectures
to provide high speed data sharing and transfers.
Tivoli software was selected because of it offered
flexibility and scalability in complex system environments
subject to frequent changes and it protected the company’s
investment in existing systems and software.
Tivoli SANergy allows the true data sharing between
multiple computers connected on SAN allowing all of
them to access a same logical drive elimination the
data duplication and Faster access for the rendering
operation.
The Tivoli Storage management module with the clients
for SAN answered the company’s concern for backups.The
Tivoli storage agents are configured to take LAN free
backups of all the systems connected to the IBM SAN
keeping the enterprise network free for client access.
Deployment of SAN Solution with Tivoli Software has
helped Crest immensely in addressing their immediate
and long-term concerns. It allows Crest to centralize
the user and rendering data which benefits in centralized
data access and backup.
Tivoli SANergy allows the consolidated data to be shared
across multiple servers thus allowing true data sharing
on SAN which help in reducing the rendering time and
data duplication. This has led to tremendously reduce
time take for project deliverables.
